Bara-zushi Bento

BARA-ZUSHI BENTO

The appearance of “Bizen Bara-zushi” goes back to the early Edo period.  According to legend, Mitsumasa Ikeda, the first Lord of Bizen Okayama Province, ordered the people to make their meals “one bowl of soup and one dish” for the sake of frugality during the early Edo period.

People reacted sharply against the order, and put various kinds of fish and vegetables on top of rice to insist  that this is one dish.

Okayama, on the coast of Seto Inland Sea, is blessed with an abundance of seafood, and riches of the soil thanks to genial climate.

Yoko got a “Bara-Zushi Bento” for supper on the bullet train on the way back from Okayama to Tokyo. It looks gorgeous with a lot of dishes with spring colors.
