A Little Introduction about Roppongi:

Roppongi is well known as the most popular nightlife entertainment and high-end shopping district, offering a large number of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. Thanks to the growing number of art museums in the area, Roppongi is now regarded as one of the prominent contemporary art cultural centers of Tokyo. One of the area’s claims to fame is Roppongi Art Triangle. All are located within easy walking distance. We will walk around the area, popping into galleries and museums that Roppongi has to offer!

History:

Tokyo’s history started in 1603, about 400 years ago, when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his military government in Tokyo. Edo is an old name of Tokyo.

Roppongi district was originally the residential area for samurai serving to the Tokugawa Government. After the Meiji period (1868~1912), there was a residence of the Okubo Family belonging to the Odawara-han clan.

In 1890, the Third Guard of the Imperial Japanese Army was moved to a site near Roppongi and became a military facility site. The area was destroyed by aerial bombing raids during WWII. After WWII, 

the US Army and Allied government officials occupied several facilities including US Embassy housing compound and Akasaka Press Center (Hardy Barracks), Stars and Stripes office and heliport in the area, beginning Roppongi’s reputation as a neighborhood with large numbers of non-Japanese.

With the influx of soldiers, many bars and restaurants opened to cater to military personnel. The Roppongi area received a major economic boost in 2002-2006 when the Izumi Garden Tower, the Roppongi Hills, and the Tokyo Midtown project were completed. These projects brought high-end office and condominium space to Roppongi.
