EDO KIRIKO CUT GLASS - "HANASHYO"

EDO KIRIKO Cut Glass - "HANASHYO"

EDO KIRIKO is the original Japanese art craft that has long been appreciated by Japanese people for its style and design.

Edo Kiriko was founded during the Edo period.  When Japan began to open a country in the Western world during the Meiji period, about 130 years ago, Japanese traditional cultures were influenced by foreign cultures.

Japanese artisan merged the European technologies into glass cutting methods and developed their own technique, and produced the Japanese original art craft.

We visited “HANASHYO” located in Nihonbashi Honcho which used to be a major mercantile center during the Edo period.  This is a small shop, but there are a variety of KIRIKO products.

You may be impressed with Kiriko’s beauty and its designs. Hanashyo has developed its original patters, in addition to traditional popular patterns.

Japanese traditional patterns have been used throughout history to modern day, inspired by nature and other everyday goods. Here are some more examples:

Yarai – A geometric pattern of the flight of arrows

Kagome – Another geometric pattern of woven ropes

Asanoha (Hemp Leaf) - -A geometric pattern of six diamond shapes arranged around a common center

Nanako - A geometoric pattern that looks as if they are composed of many drops of fish eggs connected together

They have invented their original patters as well, such as checkered pattern.

KIRIKO would make a wonderful gift for your friends or clients.  I couldn't be happier if I drink SAKE with a Kiriko glass.

HANASHYO opened an Edo Kiriko school “Hanashyo’S” in Kameido, downtown Tokyo to establish Japanese glass culture and foster artisans.
